Recent Downtimes - By cold on May 17th, 2009

There have been quite a few questions about what has been going on and since most of you who are asking aren’t in the steam group (hint, hint) I figured I would post an update of what has gone down throughout the day. Basically our website has fallen victim to a distributed denial of service attack which is simply spamming requests to our web server. By spamming requests the attacker is able tie up the web server thus preventing legitimate traffic, you and me, from getting to the website, hence the blank pages when you would try to load a page.

At first I had to take down the Lounge, accompanying Sassilization servers as well as the website due to the way they are integrated together but later came to a solution which allowed me to put up the servers. I talked over some solutions with a friend and one clever idea he had was to forward the traffic with some DNS changes to a site which might not be so friendly, Microsoft.com. Although this solution did relieve our web server it wasn’t desirable for obvious reasons. After talking again he hinted me to go look for a module for Apache (our web server) which is made for these kinds of things, so I did. I was able to find a module which looks for rapidly repeating traffic and, when it finds it, puts them on a blacklist which makes successive requests lead them to a 403 page.

We are still being attacked so you can understand if the site goes slow or if a page does not load at all.

Update:
We are no longer being attacked.

Update 2:
We are being attacked again. Whoever is attacking us, if you want to talk and possibly reach a solution please try us on our ventrilo: vent.sassilization.com port 4100

This is why I need my admin back.
If I was still admin shit like this wouldn’t happen.
Just be lucky I was around and sober when cold asked me for help.

Doc Green wrote:

What would be the difference if you had admin. They aren’t on the servers when someone DDos’s….

Subwar wrote:

Well, if I was admin I would tend to the server more often and have greater powers to stop and prevent future attacks.

Doc Green wrote:

So how would this prevent somebody thats not on the server from ddosing?

Subwar is still butthurt wrote:

Keep whining.

I have a log from the guy who’s “Best friend” is doing it. I got threatened with a ddos for calling him a script kiddy. Quite funny actually. AND LOL He just said “*some IP* Spencers IP that I just scanned just so you guys know” and it wasn’t even close to mine xD Cold, if you want the log of where he said all this junk, I can send it your way.

Co Bullet wrote:

I think the attacks are over :D , but as too everyone else their really isnt anything you can do as an admin vs a normal player since cold does all the work. So keep whining for your admin back sub

Lex wrote:

What? What has these attacks got to do with a guy losing admin?

Spencer wrote:

Some guy got banned and was butthurt, and his little butt-buddy jepperton threatens people with the DDOS when they make fun of him for being a noob. And He keeps bragging “My friend is the one who DDOS’d love me” etc. Kinda silly tbh.

Boofa wrote:

Again, what the fuck has that to do with the DDOS attack on the server?

If you want to whine do it on the forums and not in the news. Also that was off topic -

Good job you got the stuff up again

Boofa wrote:

Also, i was online on the time that happend spencer, and if you are taking him seriously you really got a problem…

Leave the kid alone?

Subwar wrote:

Doc Green: Admin powers gives you access to more than just the Garry’s Mod servers.

Doc Green wrote:

Keep trolling Sub

Anonymous DDOS wrote:

I will stop for now and in the mean time I suggest you start looking for some security scripts

:)

cold wrote:

How do security scripts help us against a DDOS?

Sickshot wrote:

I wonder who that could have been..
